Why doesn’t Jessica want Lorenzo to see

her? She doesn't want Lorenzo seeing her disguised as a boy

Why is Antonio looking for Gratiano? (Black Pg. 71, Blue Pg.52) Because they are going somewhere.

Act Two, Scene Seven

Which casket does the Prince of Morocco think is worthy to contain Portia’s portrait? The gold casket, he thinks it's the best choice because the gold casket mean "He who chooses me will get what many men want" and he thought the whole world want her.

Complete this quote ‘Is’t like that lead contains her; ‘Twere damnation to think so base a thought’ (Black Pg. 79, Blue Pg.54)

Portia’s father uses the casket test to find her the most suitable husband. Do you think his test is working?

No, to me it's not the best thing to do. If I were Portia's dad, I would say to her to pick anyone you like to be husband with.

Act Two, Scene Eight
What two disasters have happened to Shylock?
His daughter ran away with a christian and his ducats.

Complete this quote that tells where Shylock think Lorenzo & Jessica have gone? ‘The villain Jew with outcrises raised the duke, who went with him to search Bassanio's ship’ (Black Pg. 81, Blue Pg.55)

How did Bassanio and Antonio leave Venice?
They sailed away together on Bassanio ship

‘In the narrow seas that part the French and English, there miscarried a vessel of our country richly fraught’ (Black P. 83, Blue P.56) What is the first suggestion of trouble for Antonio?
Frenchmen yesterday who said that the Venetian ship loaded with treasure was wrecked in the English Channel, this means bassonio ship might be the one got wrecked.

Act Two, Scene Nine
What is the purpose of the rhymes in the caskets?

Why does the Prince of Arragon discard the golden casket?

Complete this quote from the golden casket  ‘He who chooses me shall get what many men desire’ (Black Pg. 87, Blue Pg.58)
Finish this quote that shows us Portia’s reaction to Bassanio’s arrival ‘Come, come, Nerissa; for I long to see quick post that comes so mannerly(Black Pg. 91, Blue Pg.61)

Act Three, Scene One
  1. Why does Shylock assume Solanio and Salerio know that Jessica’s ran away? Because Solanio knew she'll run away and said to Shylock that "it's natural for children to leave their parents". Just what I think.
  2. Complete this quote to suggests Antonios second misfortune:
Salerio: Do you hear whether Antonio have had any loss at sea or no?
Shylock: There I have another bad match!, a bankrupt. (Black Pg. 95, Blue Pg.63)
  1. Who has been looking for Lorenzo and Jessica? (Black Pg. 97, Blue Pg.64) The one who's looking for Lorenzo and Jessica is Shylock.
Where do Shylock and Tubal arrange to meet and with what purpose? ‘I will go Tubal, and meet me at our synagogue(Black Pg. 99, Blue Pg.66 Tubal and Shylock will meet at synagogue and the reason why is they plan to arrest Antonio for not paying.

Act Three, Scene Two Why does Portia want Bassanio to delay his choice?
Portia thinks Basssanio might choose the wrong choice and he doesn't want to lose him. Complete this quote ‘I pray you tarry, pause a day or two before you hazard, for in choosing wrong I lose your company’ (Black Pg. 105, Blue Pg.66) What makes Bassanio choose lead over the silver and gold caskets? Finish this quote, ‘Thou meagre lead which rather threatenest than dost promise aught, thy paleness moves me more than eloquence, and here choose I’ (Black Pg. 111, Blue Pg.69) Complete Portia’s speech that tells us the expected roles of a woman in marriage. ‘Myself and what is mine, to you and yours is now converted’ (Black Pg. 113, Blue Pg.71) What does the above quote mean?
It means that everything she have now belongs to him.
What did Gratiano’s and Nerissa’s wish to marry depend on? (Black Pg. 116-7, Blue Pg.72-3) It depends on Portia and Bassanio getting married and if they get married, Gratiano and Nerrisa also will be married at the same time

How does Portia know that the letter contains bad news? (Black Pg. 119, Blue Pg.72-3) Portia know something bad in the letter made Bassanio turn pale, and she thinks Bassanio's good friend might have died of what in the letter said.
What help does Portia offer straightaway? (Black Pg. 123, Blue Pg.76)
She straightaway offered herself to Bassanio because he won the challenge chest thing and even though she still love Bassanio if he loses, I think. Why do we not expect this help to be successful?
Because it's kinda wrong I think.
Do you think Portia would still be in love with Bassanio if she knew he had lied about his wealth? Yes, because it doesn't matter if Bassanio lied because he won the chest thingy. I think...

Act Three, Scene Three:

Antonio is now convinced that he knows the reason for Shylock’s insistence on claiming his bond. Finish the quote that tells us this, ‘He seek my life, for reasons I know well, I oft delivered from his forfeitures many that have at times made moan to me; therefore he hates me’ (Black Pg. 129, Blue Pg.77)

Why can the Duke not ‘deny the course of law’ according to Antonio? Because it would threaten the security of all foreign merchants in Venice.

Why does Antonio seem resigned to his fate? What two important realisations is this based on? He can't do anything about it because of the law. Two things makes Antonio resigned to his fate is giving money to those unable to pay back their loans to Shylock and the dukes can't allow anything like that because dukes can't deny the law .

Do you think Antonio’s feelings towards Bassanio have changed since the beginning, why? No, I'm not sure if Antonio's feelings towards Bassanio have changed since the beginning

Finish this quote ‘Pray God Bassanio come to see me pay his debt, and then I care not’ (Black Pg. 131, Blue Pg.78)

Shylock refuses to consider the idea of Mercy, but demands Justice. Is true justice possible in this case? No, those who are unable to pay their loans must be very poor and really need money to live, there's always a second chance to pay their loans so justice is not needed in this case. I think...

Act Three, Scene Four
Finish this quote that shows Lorenzo’s opinion of Antonio? ‘But if you knew of whom you show this honor, how true a gentlemen you send relief(Black Pg. 131, Blue Pg.78)

What does Portia tell Lorenzo she intends to do? (Black Pg. 133, Blue Pg.79) She said that he's going to take charge of the management of her house until her husband comes back.

What does she ask Lorenzo and Jessica to do for her and why?
She asked that Lorenzo and Jessica will be the masters of the house in place of Bassanio and herself, because she and Jessica are planning to pretend like a men and do something..

Why do Portia and Nerissa intend to travel dressed as men?
To pretend like a teenage boy and tell lies on other men.

Finish this quote which shows how Portia describes the behaviour and attitudes of young men. ‘Like a fine bragging youth, and tell quaint lies, how honorable ladies fell sick and died(Black Pg. 135, Blue Pg.81)

Does it seem likely that Portia is going to follow the expected  behaviour of a wife? No, it is just wrong. I think.

Act Three, Scene Five

In his jokey conversation with Jessica, why is Launcelot against the conversion of Jews to Christianity?
Launcelot said that a jew converting into a Christian won't get into heaven and Lorenzo is the responsible why Jessica converted into a Christian.

What is Jessica’s opinion of Portia?

Her opinion is that she likes her more than she can say and it's a blessing that Bassinio's having a wife like Portia.

Act Four, Scene One

What does the Duke believe Antonio intends to do? (Black Pg. 147, Blue Pg.85)  Antonio will reply to Shylock's rage with a quietness of spirit

What does Shylock intend to do?
What Shylock intend to do is he sworn by the holy Sabbath to seek the penalty that is due according to our contract

Finish this quote that tells us why, ‘You’ll ask me why I rather choose to have a weight of carrion flesh, than to receive three thousand ducats. I’ll not answer that, but to say it is my humour, is it answered?’ (Black Pg. 149, Blue Pg.86)

What two loopholes does Portia find in the wording of the contract? (Black Pg. 165-167, Blue Pg.95-96)
Shylock can have a pound of flesh, but he cannot have any blood. If Antonio bleeds, the courts of Venice will confiscate all of his property and land.

Shylock now has to pay penalties. Complete this quotes that tell us what the penalties are: ‘I pardon thee thy life before thou ask it, For half thy wealth, it is Antonio's, the other half comes to the general state’ (Black Pg. 169, Blue Pg.97)

Are the penalties fair? Why/why not.
Yes, because it is the right thing to do...I guess...

How do Lorenzo and Jessica gain by the result?
They became a wife and husband... I think...eh?

What reward has Portia claimed and why is this significant?
She claimed her ring from Bassanio and it's a symbol of their marriage I guess...

Portia tells Shylock ‘The quality of mercy is not strained’. How does she try to persuade Shylock to show mercy, how much mercy is she willing to show him? (Black Pg. 157-159, Blue Pg.91-92) )
Portia is telling that Shylock have the chance to be mercy on Bassanio.

Act Four, Scene Two

What invitation does Portia refuse and why?
She refuse to have a dinner to Bassanio because she's going to give a deed to Shylock and let him sign it

What does Nerissa plan to get, why do you think this is important? Nerissa's plan to get his husband's ring which she made him swear to keep it forever.

Do you admire Portia after these scenes, or do you find her actions cruel. Use examples to support your thinking.
No because she's against the cruel person which is Shylock... Eh? Not sure if I'm right....

Act Five, Scene One
Why do Lorenzo and Jessica remind each of the stories of classical lovers?  (Black Pg. 183-185, p.182 gives specific examples, Blue Pg.107-108)

What are Portia's feelings as she approaches the house?  (Black Pg. 189, Blue Pg.105)

What is the first argument to break out? ‘’By yander moon I swear you do me wrong, In faith I gave it to the judge's clerk’ (Black Pg. 193, Blue Pg.107)

How do Gratiano and Bassanio try to justify parting with the rings, are they successful?  (Black Pg. 193-197, Blue Pg.108-110)

Was Bassanio right to give away the ring, give reasons for your thinking.

Complete this quote to show the effect these arguments have on Antonio?  ‘I once did lend my body for his wealth, … I dare be bound again, my soul upon the forfeit that your lord will never more break faith advisedly’ (Black Pg. 199, Blue Pg 111)

Portia and Nerissa have the rings. What does this prove to Antonio, Gratiano and  Bassanio? Hint- Who were they in the court? (Black Pg. 201, Blue Pg 111)
